Black Bay 58
The Black Bay Fifty-Eight is a modern diving watch made at the scale of an older one. When Tudor introduced it in 2018, its 39 mm case offered a smaller alternative within the Black Bay range. It kept the rotating timing ring, clear luminous hands and screw-down crown, but omitted a date. Nothing interrupted the circle of hour markers.
The name points to 1958, when Tudor introduced the reference 7924, its first diving watch rated to 200 metres. The new watch borrowed the prominent crown without protective shoulders and other early details. Its square-ended “snowflake” hour hand came from a later chapter: Tudor's diving watches of 1969. The Fifty-Eight combines those periods rather than reproducing one old model exactly.
Tudor developed a smaller automatic movement, the MT5402, for the new case. Its roughly 70-hour running reserve and sapphire crystal belong to modern construction, despite the older appearance. The first version, reference 79030N, used a black dial and gold-coloured details. The Navy Blue 79030B followed in 2020 with silver-coloured hands and markers. The proportions and basic mechanism stayed the same; changing those colours removed much of the first model's deliberately aged look.
The bracelet makes a similar distinction between appearance and construction. Its exposed rivet heads recall Tudor bracelets of the 1950s and 1960s, but the links are solid rather than folded. From the crown to the bracelet, the family keeps selecting parts of the old design and rebuilding them differently.
