Sky-Dweller 42mm White Rolesor (326934, 2017-2023)

The Sky-Dweller is a large automatic travel watch with two time zones and an annual calendar. Rolex first offered the family in gold in 2012. Reference 326934, introduced in 2017, brought the same functions to a steel case and bracelet with a white-gold bezel.

At 42 millimeters, it can initially look like an enlarged Datejust. Then the off-center disc becomes apparent. It is marked with twenty-four hours and turns beneath a fixed red triangle, showing the time in a second place. The main hands remain available for local time, and the local hour hand can be changed independently.

The other unusual display is much smaller. Outside each hour marker is a rectangular window. One is red, identifying the month by the hour position: January at one, February at two, and so on. The ordinary date stays under a magnifying lens at three.

Calibre 9001 coordinates those displays. Its annual calendar distinguishes months of thirty and thirty-one days, though it still needs correcting at the end of February. The date follows the local hour, rather than the second time displayed on the disc.

Setting all of this does not require a collection of recessed buttons. The fluted bezel turns to select which function the crown will adjust. Rolex calls it Ring Command. The familiar gold ridges are therefore a usable control surface, not just the decoration they appear to be.

The result is still a crowded watch. The second-time disc occupies a large part of the lower dial, and the main hands must pass across it. But the month display is exceptionally economical: twelve small windows do a job that could have required another hand and another scale.

This is the calibre 9001 generation. The similar-looking 336934 introduced in 2023 uses a different movement, even though its arrangement remains familiar.
