Royal Oak 41mm Blue (15400ST, 2012-2019)
15400ST
The blue Royal Oak 15400 is a 41 mm steel automatic with a date and three central hands. Audemars Piguet introduced this generation in 2012, enlarging its regular automatic Royal Oak from the preceding 39 mm model. It is a different branch from the extra-thin “Jumbo,” even though both share the eight-sided frame and continuous steel bracelet.
The bracelet is central to how the watch is drawn. Its first links meet the broad case directly, then step down towards the clasp. Brushed upper surfaces sit beside narrow polished edges. Those changes of finish make the links and angles distinct even though almost everything around the dial is the same metal.
Inside the frame, the blue face carries a grid of raised squares called Grande Tapisserie. Long applied hour markers interrupt the grid, and the AP initials sit just below twelve. The word “Automatic” occupies a small patch above six. There is more text here than on the following 15500, but still only one calendar opening, placed inboard of the outer minute track.
That position is partly a consequence of the movement. The 15400 retained calibre 3120 from the smaller preceding Royal Oak, even as the case grew. The date could not simply migrate outwards with the edge of the dial. Through the sapphire back, the automatic movement's gold winding weight turns above the mechanism, winding the mainspring as the wearer moves.
The later 15500 kept the 41 mm size but received a larger movement and moved its date window closer to the edge. Looking at the two faces side by side makes the distinction clear. On the 15400, more blue patterned dial remains outside the calendar, and the smaller internal mechanism helps determine the arrangement of the whole face.
